Electrificación de flotas mecanismos y soluciones financieras

The English version of this text is below.

The Road to Fleet Electrification: Financing Mechanisms and Solutions

In the quest to provide a cleaner and more liveable environment for their residents, many Latin American cities are considering the deployment of zero emission buses; however, access to finance remains one of the main challenges. There are success stories and some cities in the region have managed to overcome these challenges and have become world leaders in this clean transition.

In order to provide more information on the issue of financing sustainable transport projects, the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) and Zero Emission Bus Rapid-Deployment Accelerator (ZEBRA) programmes co-led the organisation of an event specifically focused on sustainable transport financing.

The virtual event "The Road to Fleet Electrification: Financing Mechanisms and Solutions" was organised within the framework of the 4th Transport and Climate Change Week, organised by the TRANSfer project of the German Cooperation Agency (GiZ) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

The objective of the session was to demonstrate to cities in the region what mechanisms and solutions exist to overcome the financing challenges that arise when seeking a transition to electromobility.

The event featured the following speakers:

  • Thomas Maltese —ZEBRA Project Manager— gave an introduction to the electric bus landscape in Latin America.
  • Gabriel Tenenbaum —General Manager of Strategic Projects at the Department of Transport of Rio de Janeiro— spoke about the effect of COVID in the city and the difficulties encountered in relation to the contractual model, as well as the opportunity to change the operational and financial management structure towards an electromobility scheme.
  • A "Conversation with Investors" took place where Nhiura Coaquira—Head of Business Development at Enel X— and Carlos Botello— Financial Director of Projects at Grupo Ascendal— commented on the opportunities and business models that exist in the transition to electromobility.
  • Finally, Selene Aparicio —Senior Engagement Manager at CFF— gave a brief overview of the existing CFF resources for cities on electromobility.
