Growing the walking and cycling footprint in Tshwane

14th - 15th of October, held virtually

Virtual Indaba - Invitation

What is the Virtual Indaba - Growing the walking and cycling footprint in Tshwane? Non-Motorised Transport (i.e. walking and cycling) and the need for NMT infrastructure and support is articulated in a range of policy documents. Despite these pronouncements, budgets and implementation are skewed in favour of private car users and, to a more limited extent, mass transit. To address these challenges, the City of Tshwane and the C40 Cities Finance Facility are planning a Virtual Indaba, 'Growing the walking and cycling footprint in the City of Tshwane: It needs all of us'. The Indaba aims to grow the circle of support and advocates for walking and cycling in Tshwane and it is designed to build alliances, empower more voices and co-create a vision for NMT. The event builds upon a multi-year collaboration between the City of Tshwane and the C40 Cities Finance Facility.

When and where is the Indaba? The event is will be held over 2 days, on October 14-15, 10.00-13.00 (South Africa; GMT +2). The event will be highly participative in nature, using a combination of Zoom as the virtual platform and Mural as a capturing and recording tool.

What are the objectives of the Indaba
? Rather than focusing on political pronouncements, the Indaba is an opportunity to leverage diverse and non-traditional voices from academia, civil society and private sector to join the City of Tshwane in actively advocating for a greater focus on walking and cycling / NMT. It aims to establish a community of practice that can collectively implement an action-oriented agenda which participants will develop as part of the Indaba. This year's Indaba builds on a similar event held in October 2019. The Indaba is contributing to the agendas of South Africa's Transport Month and the African Mobility Month.

Who will participate? The participants will include up to 100 invited guests and stakeholders. If you'd like to join, please register!
